Album Review: Four Tet - There Is Love in You
by Lauren Jefferson

Four Tet’s There Is Love in You (Domino Records), is something you wouldn’t want to miss. Four Tet is the project of Kieran Hebden of the post-rock band Fridge. There Is Love You is the fifth release from Four Tet, but is the first full-length in over four years.

If you’ve never heard Four Tet, the sound is far from the post-rock sound of Fridge. It takes on almost a newly reborn house beat that combines other genres as well. Hebden typically samples a variety of sources including hip-hop, electronica, techno, jazz, and folk. This album has more of a hip-hop, electronica, techno feel, which might explain that “newly reborn house beat” vibe that I get.

This is one of those albums that you can relax to and enjoy. It’s the perfect things if you want something to chill to, but if you’re looking for something to stimulate your mind, the texture and layering of Four Tet’s music just might do the trick. From the twisting vocal melodies of the opening track “Angel Echoes”, Hebdin creates a nice head-bobbing hook that draws you in for the rest of the album.

The standout track for this album has to be the final track, “She Just Likes to Fight.” It features a very smooth overall sound over a steady and crisp beat. With its glistening guitar and synthesizers throughout the whole track, you’ll keep you coming back for more. It’s more of a laid back track when compared to the other eight. It’s the perfect ending to this album.
