Spooky Sounds 2023 Recap

Friday, October 27th, the Cook Student Center was rocked by this year's Spooky Sounds Coffee House. The annual haunt featured acts from our open mic, drag performances, and local bands. Our audience and performers showed up and showed out in costume with friends and fiends to rock, mosh, and see local artists live.

Our first performance was by Opal (@fairycolalime) who sang original songs played live that evening by Dan (@kuh.pree) on guitar. The two also played originals from their band Dizzy! (@dixxyexpt) "fairy indie band." The beautiful vocals and acoustic set opened the evening with an ethereal vibe that paired well with the full moon that night.

Next, the audience was wowed by a "drag show sorta-kind-of" featuring not one but three queens! First up was Queen Elizabeth New Jersey (@queenelizabethnewjersey), with calisthenics guiding the audience through Village People's "YMCA."

Followed by T'angelina HoLee (@theetangelinaholee) who started their set with the Halloweentown Themesong, which put the audience in stitches and was followed by a performance of "My Bed is Big Enough for The Two of Us" by local NJ band Pop Alma!

Last but not least, Miss Acid Reflux (@missacidreflux) took the stage with an eerily beautiful performance like a doll possessed.

During the intermission, all the chairs in the auditorium were pulled back, to clear a dance floor for the next acts. New Brunswick band The Slice (@thesliceband) took the stage in costume and stirred the crowd.

Our next band was Pet Rock Olympian (@pet.rock.olympian) who dressed as the full cast of McDonald's characters and opened (appropriately) with a cover of "Rock N Roll McDonald's" by Wesley Willis. They followed with original songs off their debut EP released earlier that day!

Things slowed down, and the audience was invited to sit at the foot of the stage, beyond the neon strip light and below the speakers as Icon Icon played a transcendental set with acoustic guitars with Nachi Anand on vocals. Then, trading in his acoustic for an electric guitar, Nachi was joined by Alessandro Barlotta on drums before they were joined on stage by Core's own Midnight Cafe (and friends) for an experimental music experience.

Thanks to all our DJs for hosting such a great event, all our performers, and everyone who came out. Happy Halloween! See you next year!
